MANAWATU HUNT

Levin Branch Meeting Dominion Special Service. Levin, August 3.

There was a very good attendance at the annual point-to-point steeplechase meeting of the Levin branch of the Manawatu Hunt. Club, held on the Levin racecourse to-day. Mr. W. W. Andrews was honorary judge, Mr. A. M. Colqulioun honorary clerk of scales, Mr. J. YV. Procter honorary " starter and Mr. M. Brown honorary clerk of course. The first race, the Otaki Open Lightweight Point-to-Point Steeplechase, open to all qualified hunters, season 1035, was contested by five starters. On the first round Platina went to the front, where it led with Waitaunaha until they reached the stand double, where both horses went off to leave Swift Ray heading High Society and Gunpowder. From there Swift Ray won comfortably, with a gap of some 30 lengths between It and YVaitaunaha and Patina.

Brickland’s Gambler (YY r . Bradbury). From the start all horses kept fairly "bunched until at the end of the first round. Ruenzori, Airforce, Cometra and Otaki were lying in that order. Going round the back Cometra came into second place and Battleground showed distinct improvement. On the turn for home Cometra came to the front, with Otaki and Battleground moving up fast. At the home turn, however, tlie leader dropped back with Swift Ray coming in front. Down the straight proved a sterling finish.
