HIGHWEIGHT EVENTS

Position of A. E. Ellis Dominion Special Service. Clu’istcliurch, February 6. The conditions of the highweight eveitV at the recent meeting at Trantham stimulated that they were confined to jockeys who, within the last two years, have ridden three times in a steeplechase or hurdle race in New Zealand. Following an announe’ement that A. E. Ellis was to ride WJno in the first day’s race, the chief stipendiary steward questioned his eligibility and referred the matter to the club officials, who ruled that “the last two years” meant two previous racing years, expiring in August of last year. Under this contention Ellis, who had' had the requisite mounts, during . that period, was considered eligible. Similar conditions attach to Saturday's race at Riccarton, in which Ellis has been engaged for Imperial Spear. H. Turner to Ride Ranelagh. Ranelagh will be ridden in the highweight event on Saturday by H. Turner. He is at present carrying some solid condition and if he can be persuaded to give of his best he is capable of outclassing the opposition. If he should again fail his prospects of being a payable proposition for the remainder of the season would certainly not look very bright.

Mr. G. Luoni, of the Royal Hotel. Palmerston North, will control the publican's booths at the Woodville races. The catering privilege has been let to Mr. R. A. Nicol, of Dannevirke.
