HUTT VALLEY NEWS

The weather yesterday proved too much for a small dog of no particular pedigree which had a lit in Jackson Street, Petone. The animal got into distress in the middle of the road, and sympathisers emptied buckets of water over it as a cooler. The dog, which must have been in the fit for about an hour, was finally bundled into a sack, and a boy, who was offered sixpence for the job, agreed to take it to its home. The interesting part of the incident was the number of people who stood about to watch the dog’s antics. Even motor-cars pulled up.

With the completion of the school holidays the east harbour bays saw an exodus of people yesterday, the beaches bearing a forlorn appearance In comparison with the crowds seen there of recent weeks. The bays have been exceedingly popular this summer; in fact, the number of people who have spent their holidays there has probably been a record. So far as Eastbourne is concerned the water and sewerage systems have been largely responsible for its popularity.

With the laudable object of making things better for swimmers, some thoughtful person at Muritai has built a raft out of oil drums and timber. However, one l<ither who wanted to Use jt yesterday was not impressed with the workmanship, for when he tried to climb aboard the whole thing tipped over on top of him. The bather is now satisfied that it is necessary to approach the raft with caution.
