Protection of Women

Sir, —Another tragedy has taken place in Melbourne, in which a married man shot and then ibeat his'young wife to death with an iron bar, and all this took place in one of the main streets. One wonders what the other people were doing when this was going on. These horrible crimes seem to be fairly frequent in Australia and New Zealand. They are practically unknown in England, because the lunatic would he manhandled or lynched before he could do much harm. The authorities here are far too lenient with married men who threaten and illtreat their wives. Not so long ago, in the Auckland district, a married man deliberately shot his young wife dead, when she was trembling with terror, in the public street. Any man who threatens and illtreats his wife when she is living with him, or who follows and molests and threatens her if she has left him, should he most severely dealt with. —I am, etc., C.H. Wellington, February 3.
