Alsatians and Other Breeds
Sir, —I desire to protest against the condemnation and death-penalty imposed upon an Alsatian when just within the last two weeks two collie degs have savagely attacked two girls without provocation, one so badly that the victim is in hospital. I am sure that if anyone had witnessed *>me of the recent bitings by other breeds of dogs—as instance recently at one of the bays when a Fox terrier resenting its owner’s correction, bit her arm from shoulder to wrist—he would not say that the Alsatian is unreliable in his temper in comparison with other breeds. It does seem only British and fair that the same justice should be meted to .all breeds and owners. In the case to which I refer the complainant did not give evidence against the dog but declared the dog was not vicious and did not want it to be destroyed. Surely it is high time this prejudice against this noble breed should give place to sweet reasoning with the realisation that from time immemorial dogs have bitten, long before the Alsatian’ever existed.—l am. etc.. M. E.’CAMPBELL. Wellington, February 2.
