Grave Increase Reported MOSCOW’S DESTROYING HAND By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received December 14, 9.15 p.m.) Calcutta, December 14. There has been a grave increase in Communist activities in India during the past few months following the discovery of Moscow s plans for Intensifying a subversive campaign against the British Government of India, including the organisation of strikej, the nationalist. student and peasant movements, and an endeavour to undermine the loyglty of Indian troops. The most powerful Red groups are in Calcutta and Bombay. Agitators are now endeavouring to develop the movement in the agricultural areas. HEAVY SENTENCES Trial of Terrorist Gang Calcutta, December 13. A special tribunal at Lahore, after a trial extending over three years, inflicted heavy sentences on a gang of terrorists for a series of crimes in the Punjab and elsewhere. Two were sentenced to death, three to transportation for life, and eleven to terms of imprisonment with hard labour ranging from two to seven years. Five were acquitted. The accused formed an organisation in 1926, called the “Hindustan Repuolican Army,” with the aim of securing the freedom of India. Bombs and ammunition were obtained. The first crime was an attempt to wreck the special train of the Viceroy, then Lord Irwin, in December, 1929, when bombs were laid on the railway line near Delhi but were discovered in time to prevent disaster.
