Miss V. Corliss’s Pupils

Miss Valerie Corliss presented a number of her advanced students in a delightful programme of pianoforte r usie at her studio in Guthrie Street last evening. The room was crowded with guests, and gaily decorated with flowers. Miss Corliss, in a few preparatory remarks, said that the recital was being given as a demonstration of the work of a class for . performers and teachers which she holds regularly throughout the year. All the players showed a very high standard of performance, and of artistic and technical attainment. It was noticeable that every performer used the piano as a medium for expression, conveying to the audience the feeling and uipod suggested by the composition. The programme was well balanced,, arranged with a fine regard for contrast and variety. All the items were played from memory. The various groups of national music showed serious study of the characteristics of the different peoples and periods, and throughout there was a marked display of thoroughness in performance. The performers were: Anna Plimmer, Elsie Grix, Dorothy La Roche, Beryl Oakley, Molly Oakley, Lorna Black, Laurie Jones, Grace Gaudin, Marion MeCaul, Olive Shorland. Catherine Moncrieff, Keith Picton. The programme consisted of a Bach Prelude, a Bach-Tausig Toccata and Fugue, a Beethoven Sonata, two Chopin numbers, a concert study of Liszt, a Mendelssohn Prelude, and a Brahms Rhapsodic, followed by groups of British, Finnish, French and Russian composers. Also included on the programme was a Grieg Sonata for violin and piano played by Prue Lewis and Arthur Fieldhouse.
