Viscount Snowden’s Life
A lecture on Viscount Snowden of Ickornshaw by the Rev. Moses Ayrton, of Otaki, occupied the major portion of this w.eek’s meeting of the Yorkshire Soqiety of New Zealand. The life sketch of the statesman was brightened by many humorous sidelights, which appealed to the audience. The lecturer maintained that Philip Snowden was one of the greatest of England’s statesmen.
Reference was made by the president, Mr. Karl Atkinson, to recent events in Yorkshire, which included the visit of the King and Queen to Leeds. Yorkshire’s third successive victory in the county cricket championship was extolled, and the Wilberforce centenary celebrations at Hull were referred to.
Mr. read an entertaining dialect story by John Hartley, “Property Huntin'.’” An exchange of Yorkshire newspapers created much interest.
