STUDENTS ENTERTAIN

Wellington East College

A large and enthusiastic audience greeted the entertainment presented last evening at the Concert Chamber by the Wellington East Girls’ College, part of the proceeds of which will be given to the Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund. Stalls for flowers and sweets, in charge of the Ladies’ Auxiliary did a flourishing trade at the head of the staircase, and the Parents’ Association managed the ushering. Miss Batham, principal, in a handsome dress of black velvet, was present. During the evening Mr. W. H. Denton, chairman of the board, thanked the audience for tlieir splendid response, and explained the objects for' which this special effort bad been organised. The first and second parts of the programme, which was .an excellent one throughout, were opened with selections by the Rongotal College Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Eric Meier. Mrs. Amy Woodward and Mrs. Wilfred Andrews sang delightful duets. Two particularly clever items were the plays “Goblin Market,” adapted and dramatised from the poem by Christina Rossetti, and “The Duke ot Gordon’s Daughter,” adapted from an old Scottish ballad. The arrangements and direction were done entirely by the college staff, and the parts were played by the students. The Swedish drill by the different forms was presented with flue precision, and the country dance was a splendid item. The songs by Forms VA Latin and VA. Modern showed careful training, and were much enjoyed. The programme will be repeated this evening.
