Musical Afternoon Given

A musical afternoon was given yesterday by the committee of the Community Services’ princess, Miss Phyllis Oliver, at her studio, 50 Courtenay Place, when a large number of friends and supporters met, and a delightful programme of songs, recitations, and dancing was enjoyed. The studio was gaily decorated in the Community Services’ colours, reu and green, the ceiling being screened with paper festoons, with bright curtains at the windows, carrying on the scheme. Tea was served while the items, all contributed by very young performers, were In progress. The programme Included elocutionary items by Ruth Stone, pupil of Mrs. Menard, Elaine Weber, and Doreen Purdie, pupils of Miss Purdie; dances by Marie June Weber, a tiny tot of three, Patricia Oliver, Joyce Appleby, Marie Corrigan, and Marie Walker, pupils of Miss Phyllis Oliver; and Norma Remmers, pupil of Mr. Knowlsley. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Walker. Cake Day Shop To-day is Cake Day at the “Old Colonial Ball” shop, 338 A Lambton Quay, and Mrs. „Jowett, of Eastbourne, who will be in charge, reports a splendid stock of cakes, home-made bacon and egg pies, sweets, pickles, and produce of various sorts, all moderately priced. Helping Mrs. Jowett will be Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Hitchings, Miss Elizabeth Atkinson, and Miss Gellespie. Poster Ball Arranged The evening introduction to the Confidence Carnival to be held in Wellington next month will take the form of a grand poster ball, which will take place in the Town Hall on Friday, October 17, the eve of the carnival opening. Prizes are to be offered for the best and most original poster designs, as expressed In the costumes, and, judging by the number of firms which have already shown an interest in the event, there are sure to be many entries. Particulars of this feature will be published later. Successful Bridge Party A most successful bridge party, organised by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Hill in support, of the Carnival Services’ princess, Miss Phyllis Oliver, was held at Gamble and Creed’s, Lambton Quay, last evening. Among those who made up tables were: Mr. and Mrs. N. J.
