POWER BOARD AFFAIRS

Deputation to Minister

LEGISLATION WANTED A deputation of members of the executive of the Power Boards’ Association waited on the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. Bitchener, yesterday afternoon, to present remits passed at Ihe recent conference of Power Boards.

The deputation was introduced by Air. J. A. Nash. M.P., president of the association, who stressed the urgency for legislation in regard to power boards and their activities. He added that if they were unable to get such legislation, then they might have to consider the advisability of the association carrying on. Other speakers were Air. M. Cable, general manager of the Wellington City Council's Tramways Department; Air. S. Blackley, of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board; and Mr. H. F. Toogood, consulting engineer, of Wellington. Remits in connection with the following were presented and discussed by the speakers:—Establishment of renewal and insurance fund: superannuation fund; special reserve; rating exemptions; peak load charges; adlustment of bulk charge; reduction of bulk charges; electricity commissioners (that the Government be urged to place its electrical undertakings under the control of commissioners) ; amalgamation of urban and rural areas; charge for bulk supply; priority of Crown as mortgagees; loan conversions (loans taken over by a local authority and table loans) ; Australian loans (interest reduction) : A 5 iremen s Registration Board; overhanging trees (cost of removal) : approval of electrical appliances: sales tax on conductor wires. Mr. Bitchener said that he was keenly interested in a number of the remits and promised that he would consult’his officers, and then take the matter to Cabinet with a view to having legislation brought down.
