VARIETY CONCERT

A variety concert was given by the Rev. Mr. Harding, of the Petone Methodist Church, to the patients in the Victoria Hospital recently. An excellent programme was presented, including mandolin, guitar and violin solos by the party quartet, Misses Burtnell, Tait and Wakelin. Others who contributed were: Miss M. Jepson, Miss E. Rumsford, Misses Wilson, Eide and Tait, Mrs. Wakelin, Mr. Wilson and Miss Gould. A vote of thanks was passed to the party, special mention being made of the Rev. Mr. Harding, who has been visiting Victoria Hospital for many years entertaining the patients..

Y.M.C.A. QUEEN CARNIVAL

On Saturday evening a “thriller” party was held at the Y.M.C.A., being arranged in support of the Optimists and General Activities’ Queen, Miss Paddy Hope Gibbons, who was present at the gathering. Those present wore tokens representing the names of wellknown “thriller” novels, the prize for the most original going to Mrs. H. E. Wilson, for “Out of the Blue” (“Sapper”), with honourable mention to Miss Innes (“Paid in Full”), and Mr. Chadwick (“The King’s Passport”). Mr. C. Spratt succeeded in detecting the most titles,, while the “Sing-Sing Sing-Song” competition was won by Miss Hope Flaws. Mr. H. Dover and Miss M. Boyle were successful in the “Chicago foxtrot” being the only couple to evade the machine-gun. A murder mystery Interlude was presented by a group of Y.M.C.A. residents; while the gangsters’ race was won by the “Bowery Beauties.” Mr. H. E. Wilson supplied the music during the evening. A buffet supper, served in the lounge, concluded a successful gathering.
