WAIRARAPA HAPPENINGS

Mastertoil, June 12.

The Mauriceville County Council at a meeting on Saturday decided to strike a general rate of Jd in the pound in each riding for the current year. The rate is the same as for last year. It was resolved to allow a discount of 5 per cent, if the rates were paid in full within 30 days of the due date. Old Wairarapa Pioneer.

Mrs. J. Reynolds, of lleuall Street, Masterton, celebrated her 95th birthday on Saturday last. She is one of the pioneers of the Wairarapa, having arrived in 1864. Mrs. Reynolds-still enjoys the best of health.

Limit Weight on Roads. It was decided at the monthly, meeting of the Mauriceville County Council to limit the weight of heavy traffic on various roads iu the county during the remainder of the winter to September 30.

Tinui Boxing Club. It was decided at the annual meeting of the Tinui Boxing Club to affiliate with the Wairarapa Boxing Association, and to hold • the opening night on Saturday next. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Chairman, Mr. E. 11. Schofield; committee, Messrs. 11. Perry, It. Lister, L. Thorby, and W. Gray; secretary, Mr. It. C. Miles. It was reported that the club had been presented with, two sets of gloves.

Mauriceville Comity Council. Mr. Robert Judd was re-elected chairman at the annual meeting of the Mauriceville County Council. It was decided that the finance committee be not less than a quorum of the whole council. Mr. Judd returned thanks and expressed his appreciation of the continued confidence of councillors, and of their cordial co-operation with him in making every effort to carry on the business of the county in the best interests of all ratepayers. “Hunt” at Whareama.

An enjoyable "hunt” was held on the property of Mr. R. Pilmer, "Waiteko,” Whareama, on Saturday. There were about 40 participants, and some splendid form was shown by tho majority of horses. These “meets” are proving very popular in the district, and are undoubtedly good schooling for horses which will probably be engaged in jumping events at A. and P. shows next season. Rugby on the East Coast.

Playing in the East Coast Rugby SubUnion competition at Homewood on Saturday/ United suffered their first defeat of the season, Homewood winning by 27 points to nil. There was not much to' choose between the two forward packs, but the Homewood rearguard was much superior to its opponents’. Tries for the winners were scored by J. Read (4), T. Baku (2) and Buckeridge (1). T. Eli converted two of the tries and H. Morris one. Mr. E. Collerton was the referee.

Reunion of P. and T. Employees. Speakers at' the seventeenth annual reunion of the Wairarapa section of the Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association, held in Masterton on Saturday night, appealed to members for continued loyalty, particularly in view of the troublous times through which the association was passing. There was a large and representative .attendance and the gathering was very successful. The chairman, Mr. L. P. Bennett, presided. The toast list was interspersed with enjoyable musical items, and a number of selections were also rendered by the staff orchestra. Special Day of Prayer. There were large congregations at bot> morning and evening services at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Masterton, yesterday, which, in accordance with an appeal by the Archbishop of Canterbury, was observed as a Day of Prayer for the World Economic Conference. Special prayers were offered at both services. The official service was held in the morning, when the preacher was the Rev. E. J- z Rich, who spoke on "Christianity and the' Conference.” Dealing with the conference he referred to the need of its success and to the correspondingly great need for prayers that this might be achieved. In the evening the preacher was the Venerable A. L. Hansell, M.A., Archdeacon of the Wairarapa.

ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH

No Evidence of Poison Mastcrlon, Juue 12. The adjourned inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of an old man, Frederick Frank Sunkel, aged 83 years, who was admitted to the Masterton Hospital on May 18 last, suffering from acute vomiting and abdominal pain, and who died the following day, was resumed by the district coroner, Mr. E. G. Eton, this morning.

Dr. O’Connor, resident medical officer at the Masterton Hospital, said that the deceased was admitted to the hospital on the recommendation of Dr. W. H. Young, of Carterton. Dr. Young had communicated with witness, and said there was some suspicion of acute irritant poisoning. Immediately on admission he emptied deceased’s stomach and preserved the contents for examination. Specimens had been forwarded to the Government Analyst, who had reported that there were no signs of poisoning. Dr. O’Connor said that in his opinion death had been caused by a . vascular catastrophe. After hearing evidence, the coroner said the investigation bad proved that there had been no cause for any suspicion of poisoning, and returned a verdict that deceased had died from causes in accordance with Dr. O’Connor’s statement. CYCLE ROAD-RACING Wanganui Club Fixture Wanganui, June 12. The Wanganui Amateur Road Cycling Club held its fourth race of the season on Saturday, over a Iti-mile course. The conditions were ideal, and inducivo to very fast riding. The front-markers held their lead right to the finish, and in a good tussle Coles managed to maintain a slight lead. Wade, off scratch, could not make up any ground, finding the lone ride too hard, but was only two seconds slower than Ain. who made fastest time. The results are :—D. Coles. 1; J. Taniehana. 2; W.
