Two Large Services Held

Wanganui, June 12.

Large congregations attended the anniversary services held by the Trinity Methodist Church on Sunday. The morning service took place in the church, when many South African veterans were present, and the Rev, 11. G. Goring gave the sermon. In the evening the service took place in the Regent Theatre, and there was a packed house, both upstairs and down. The sermon was preached by the Rev. R. Dudley, whose subject was "The World’s Greatest Love Story.” The Queen Alexandra’s Own Band was present and played several items under the baton of Lieutenant E. Webb. The choir was led by an orchestra conducted by Mr. W. Hutchens. Heavy Frosts Experienced.

The heaviest frosts recorded in Wanganui during the present winter were registered at the week-end. On Saturday morning eight degrees of frost were registered, while yesterday morning nine degrees went down on the records kept by the New Zealand Friends School, St. John’s Hill.

Boat Club Smoke Concert. Most successful was the annual smoke concert of the Aramoho Boat Club held on Saturday night. Mr. F. Haywood presided over a large attendance. Several toasts were honoured during the evening, the speakers being Messrs. H. Dalzell, A. Gray, D. Holmes. P. Evans, J. Cottcrill, O. Aitken and H. Gedge. Items were g/iven by Messrs. R. Howell, P. Swan, AV. Baird. J. Scott, and Phillips. Tribute to Teachers’ Work.

It is not only the Diocesan School at Nga Tawa, Marton, that will feel the loss of Miss McCall, who after 12 years of devoted service to the school has felt constrained to resign. There are family reasons which call her back to England (says the "Anglican Church Chronicle”). Her loss will be felt all over ‘the diocese and in many homes in New Zealand. She leaves at the end of the next term. It is good news' that a friend of hers, Miss Rosalind Fowler, will carry on her great work temporarily, at any rate. Fino Week-end,

Fine sunny weather prevailed in Wanganui over the week-end. and the generous sunshine attracted large numbers out of doors to the various sports fixtures. On Sunday the Wanganui airport was visited by over 200 people, some 40 using the Wanganui Aero Chib’s golf links. Heavy motor traffic was recorded on tho various highways.

Assistance Sought. A letter geeking assistance tor the men’s shelter was received at the meeting of the Wanganui Unemployed Advisory Committee on Saturday from the Relief Workers’ Organisation. It was decided to reply stating that application should be macle to the Mayor's Allocation Relief Committee, because the funds at the disposal of the advisory committee were for the assistance of relief workers, and not for the assistance of other organisations.

BASKETBALL MATCHES

Wanganui Competitions Wanganui, June 12. The second round of the Wanganui Basketball Association’s games was played on Saturday in perfect weather. The results were as follow:— Woolworth’s 1, v. Dublin Street Mefjiodists 1; United 13, beat Elaydon’e 4; St. Andrew’s 11, bent College 4; Girl’s College 1, lost to Athletic 5; Sacked Heart Convent 20, beat Ngatoa 2. Wairarapa Games Masterton, June 12. _ The Wairarapa Basketball tion’s champious-hip competitions were continued on Saturday afternoon in glorious weather. Following are the results: — A grade: High School Old Girls 24, beat Stars I 16; Stars If 26, beat Featherston 10. B grade: High School Old Girls 16, beat Rovers 1; the St. Patrick’s v. Kia Ora B grade match was played, but was ordered to be replayed as the conditions were not those laid down by the executive. Secondary school matches played during the week resulted as follow : —A grade: Solway College 19, beat Technical School 8. B grade: St. Bride’s 16, beat Solway College 14; High School B 22, beat High School C 4. Play at Palmerston North I’aliueiston North, June 12. .The following are the results of the basketball matches played in Palmerston North ou Saturday afternoon:—A grade: Tiri Tiro Ake beat Girls’ High School, 17-14; Y.M. Gymnasium drew with Technical A, 10-10; Girls' High School A beat Woodville A, 3-1-10; High School Old Girls, a bye. B grade: Linton beat Technical C, 27-7; Technical B beat Woodville B, 15-3; Awahuri, a bye.

Mas ter ton Clubs’ Outings Masterton. June 12. Both Masterton harrier clubs held enjoyable competitive races in beautifully fine weather on Saturday afternoon. Masterton Club. About forty runners participated in the Masterton club’s scaled handicap, oyer a seven-mile course of fairly hard hilly country. The run was particularly keen and some fast times were registered. The first runner home was T. O’Dowd (4min. 15sec.), who covered the course in 46min. 47sec. M. Quail (Imin. ISsec.) was second in 47uiiu. lasec., with W. Hack (20sec.), 47min. 20sec.. third, and J. Haise (3min.), 40min. 59sec., fourth. The fastest times registered were: W. Hack, 47.20, 1; M. Quail, 47.35, 2; C. Talbot, 47.40, 3; V. Engstrom, 4Sinin.. 4. A teams race was held in conjunction with the sealed handicap and resulted ns follows: E. Shaw (7), J. Haise (8), J. O’Dowd (9), J- Bakie (28), 52; R. Shaw (10). E. Creswell (5), S. Fye (17), H. Boys (25), 57, 2; M. Quail (2). E. Riley (13), A. Kennedy (10), M. McMullen (31), C2, 3. Kiatero Club. The Kiatere club also held a scaled handicap run, which was fought out by IS runners over a course of four miles. When the handicaps were declared, W. Rutberfurd (2min.) was placed first, in 20miu. 19sec., with James Burns (Imin.), 20.25, second, and W. McDonald (1.30), 20.45. time was registered by Alex Burns. .
