“MOTHER OF TREASURY”

Known as Mother of the Treasury, the Hon. Dame Maude Lawrence died early this year. She , was sixty-eight. Dame Maude was the first holder of the post of Director of 'Women’s Establishments at the Treasury. She should have retired two years ago, but her appointment was extended because of her - experience and capacity. When the question of her services being retained after the age of sixtylive was raised in the House of Commons last year Major Elliot (then Financial Secretary to the Treasury) stated that her retirement would be detrimental to the interests of the public service. Dame Maude was a daughter of the Lord Lawrence, Viceroy of India from 186*1 to 1869.
