UNEMPLOYED WOMEN

Successful Bureau Work

Mrs. Martin Williams gave a delightful concert at the Women’s Unemployment Bureau, Wakefield Street, last week. Those who took part, tn addition to Mrs. Williams, were Mrs. A. F. Tonks. Mrs. Fellowes, Mrs. Lockie, and Misses Zoe Millar, Sarah Walker, Mary McCarthy. Molly Beveridge, and Monica Kelly. Thanks were extended to Mrs. Martyn Williams for Mie entertainment and to tlie following for donations:—Mrs. Burrell, Upper Hutt. Macky Logan, Jas. Smith, Ltd., and Toe H. The inauguration of a stenographers practice room at the bureau has proved to be a marked success. The bureau has at its disposal six typewriters, which are available every day (except Saturday) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.. and speed practice is given every afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m. Out of 56 girls using the practice room since November, the bureau has found four permanent and 15 temporary office positions: one girl accepted a domestic position, and three secured office positions themselves.

The committee impresses upon unemployed office workers the desirability of registering at the bureau, so that they may avail themselves to the fullest, extent of the opportunittis afforded by the practice room. The committee regards the .stenographers' practice room as a means, not only of maintaining such ability as is possessed by the more experienced, but of helping and improving the ability of the junior and less experienced girls.
