Meetings in Many Centres gathering at bulls There was a large attendance of members at tlie April meeting of the Bulls Women’s Institute, held in the town ball. The president, Mrs. Ralfe, was in the chair. The meeting opened with the “Ode to Friendship,” following which the president welcomed the new secretary, Mrs. Armstrong, her assistant, Miss Trieker, and the visitors. Miss Grade gave a very interesting and instructive demonstration on home dressmaking, showing how to measure, cut out, and fit a garment. In view of the approach of Anzac Day Mrs. Ralfe demonstrated wreath making. Many curios, a number over 100 years old. came from all parts of the world and were on view. Mrs. Ralfe and Mrs. Marumaru were appointed delegates to the annual council meeting at Feilding._Thc next meeting will bo held on May 15. Porirua Meeting Mrs. Ryan, acting president, in the absence of Mrs. Vickers, presided at the monthly meeting of the Porirua Women s Institute, held in Prossers Hall. The first part of the afternoon was taken up with business, after which a short programme was given. Mrs. Ryan and Miss Brown played for a community sing. Mrs. Colley and Mrs. Teague recited. The May demonstration will be the making and re-covering of eiderdown quilts, by Mrs. Brown. The hostesses for the al’tetnoou were Mesdames Daily and Evans. Initial Tuai Meeting The first regular meeting of the Tuai unit of the Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs. J. A. Nicol presiding. Mrs. Alford and Mrs. W. Blair were hostesses. The twenty-nine members present enjoyed a most interesting and pleasant afternoon. There were a large number of novel entries for a competition on the making of something new from something old. The judging was by popular vote, and Mrs. R. Gordon was the successful competitor, Mrs. Blnir being second. A “bring and buy” stall was also conducted. After all business had been discussed afternoon tea was served. Stokes Valley Institute .More than thirty, members heartily rendered the “Ode to Friendship ’ at the first meeting for the year of the Stokes Valiev Women’s Institute. The president. Mrs. Huse, cordially welcomed Mrs. Graham and several visitors. A splendid demonstration of pine needle baskets was given by Mrs. Huse. The competition for the afternoon, 'Old Photos,” caused some amusement when the “Art Gallery” was displayed. Mrs. Rait won her three points, Mrs. Herdman coming second and Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Wylie third. Miss P Young won the prize for potato growing with 6741 b. of potatoes grown from three. Mrs. Waklin was next with 491 b. Mrs. Ronnings presented the prizes. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the committee. Meeting at Foxton The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Women’s Institute took place on Thursday afternoon at the Anglican schoolroom. The president, Mrs. A. 1. Easton, was in the chair. The attendance was good. After the opening exercises members stood in silence as a token of respect to Mesdames Holgerson and Dudson, two members who recently suffered bereavement. A suggestion from Mrs. Blythe regarding the augmenting of funds found favour, resulting in a number of gifts being donated for tho purpose. A resolution formulated by Mrs. C. H. Symons regarding an extraneous fund was seconded by Mrs. Trueman and carried unanimous1J It was decided to hold an “open night” on Tuesday, May 2, when an excellent programme will be submitted. The meeting confirmed the appointment of Mesdames Easton and Symons as delegates to the forthcoming annual meeting of the federation council at I eliding. Miss B. Speirs was the winner of the doorstop presented by Mrs. Procter. Tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Barron, Easton. East, Ebbett, Eruera, Graham, Francis and Miss Bowe.
