HIKITEA’S BIG LIFTS
Moving Heavy Transformers The four transformers which arrived from Auckland last Monday by the Port Waikato for service in the Melling substation, were landed at the Thorndon breastwork, and are being moved one at a time to the Point Howard Wharf by the Harbour Board’s floating crane Hikitea. Each transformer weighs Ifii tons, and is mounted on a trailer weighing a further 5 tons. The over-all height is 18ft. 4in., which is too high for them to pass under the overhead bridges on the Hutt Road. When it was decided to bring the transformers from the Penrose sub-sta-tion, arrangements were made with the Wellington Harbour Board for their transportation, and the oil wharf at Point Howard was strengthened to enable it to carry the transformers. From the wharf they will be towed to the Melling sub-station.
