ILLICIT SPIRIT
Man Found in Possession FINE OF £lOO IMPOSED By Telegraph.—-Press Association. > Gore, Jan. 24. At the Gore Court to-day, James Henry Botting faced a charge that spirits, on which full duty was not paid, were found on his premises at Mataura on December 30. The collector of customs described defendant as a distributor of illicit spirit, known as'“Hokonui whisky," which was most dangerous to drink, from a health point of view. Under the Distillation Act, any’person purchasing illicit whisky was liable to a fine of £5O and heavy imprisonment. The magistrate, Mr. Dixon, convicted accused, saying that he had previously been warned. Accused no doubt carried on in a small way. Botting was fined £lOO and given three months in which to pay.
