Magistrate Fines Two Men • POLICE COURT YESTERDAY Two men were fined in the Police Court yesterday by Jlr. E. Page, S.M;, for using offensive language in city streets. The first was Robert William Wilson, aged 45, who was fined £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. According to Sub-Inspector Martin he had “quite a bad list.” The other defendant was William Donoghue, a seaman, aged 44, who was fined £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment. On an additional charge of drunkenness Wilson was fined 10/-. Having been remanded in order that certain inquiries might be made, Gertrude McKenna, aged 46, appeared for sentence on a charge of aiding and abetting William Scott to obtain £25/14/11 from the Public Works Department by false pretences. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within two years if called upon, an order being made that she should remain at Mount Magdala Home for the next 12 months. A member of the unemployed camp near Horopito, Thomas Kelly, aged 28, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment to-day for using obscene language on the Valley road at Raetihi on January 19. The language was used to a fellow worker in the camp who had refused to join the Unemployed Workers’ Union. The magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, remarked that certain facts disclosed in the evidence merited the attention of the Public Works Department. Kelly was one of a party who demonstrated with a Red Flag during the visit of the Governor-General to Raetihi.
