NO FURTHER TAX
Unemployment MR. FORBES’S ASSURANCE A definite assurance that no further Increases were to be made in the wages tax for unemployment relief, was given by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in reply to a question on the point yesterday. Statements have been made during the past few weeks that in view of the failure of the unemployment registratration figures to show any appreciable decline the Government might be forced to impose additional wages taxation in order to provide adequate relief during next winter. However, it is understood that the Unemployment Boards revenue lias been better than expetced and that it will have a considerable surplus of revenue at the end qf the y ear> r, x c In a statement made on September 28, the then Acting-Jlinister of Employment, lion. A. Hamilton, said that the position was that the surplus of revenue was about £lOO,OOO, and that there would be no need for more taxation. Since then it is understood, revenue has exceeded expenditure by considerably more than the sum stated. • _
