Man Found Dead.

A middle-aged man, named William McGee, a widower, was found by the milkman on Sunday morning in his home in Hanover Street lying on the floor with a rug over his head, reports a Dunedin Press Association message. He had a gas tube in his mouth and the gas was turned on. Struck by Ball.

Apparently exhausted by the swirl of the breakers, a small penguin struggled on to 'the rocks near Island Bay one afternoon last week. Like the majority of its kind, it was quite tame, and provided amusement for picnickers. Later a man carried it to more placid water, where it dived in and made for the open sea. An onlooker remarked that he had lived in the vicinity for sixteen years, but had not previously seen a penguin on the shore.

Women Gold-diggers. Two young women, who left Auckland last week, are included in a goldprospecting party which is proceeding to the South Island. One is an Aucklander. and the other a recent arrival from England. One member of the party is a farmer residing near Auckland who has had prospecting experience in America, Australia, and New Zealand. The destination of the party is a former well-known gold-bearing area in Westland.

Question of Jobs. At one South Island freezing works the free labourer at the end of the chain gang had no flair for the work, but was doing his best in wiping down the carcases. In the surroundings his slight build and pale complexion were incongruous. A burly foreman had occasion to reprove him for his lack of skill, and when he walked away the small man shouted to the other men in the gang: “I would like to see that gentleman in my job—selling engagement rings in a jewellery shop.”
