TO AID THE DOG

“Tail-Wagger” Drive

CAMPAIGN FOR MEMBERS Formed into a. club on May 2 of this year, the Tail-Waggers in the Dominion now number 1529. These numbers are very satisfactory to the organisers, but since the service for dogs is very definitely influenced by growth in membership, the club will conduct a campaign this week for further members. Within the next few days every member owner will receive a communication from headquarters requesting that a new member be secured within a week. An application for membership will be attached, and it will only be necessary for the recipient to see that a recruit is obtained. Nearly every dog owner has a friend who keeps a dog, so that the task set the indivual Tail-Wagger owner is not a hard one. The club has been encouraged to further efforts by the interest which the public has taken in the .early activities. . ... Much of the work done by the club in tracing lost dogs is known through the medium of “The Dominion,” but the actual cases passing through the club’s hands would be too numerous to report individually. The club’s stray dog register in Wellington shows that 166 dogs have been dealt with since May. These dogs were not club members, but dogs that had strayed. A large proportion were without homes, and these have, been taken over by dog lovers, after being temporarily cared for by the club. ■ The following figures give some idea of what the actual service to dog owners who are members: Free advice on' dog management and care: Telephone and personal inquiries answered since last May, 840. Tail-Waggers that have actually received treatment, 240. Ten dogs belonging to the club are at the moment undergoing treatment. The collar medallion that is the distinguishing mark of the Tail-Wagger has been instrumental in recovering many dogs, and its use has been illustrated, in almost every town in the Dominion. Tail-Waggers traced through the medallion in Wellington alone number 84. The illustrated service for lost dogs has been very effective, and only four dogs out of 40 illustrated have not been traced. Thirty of these have been illustrated in “The Dominion,” and of these pnly two have not been traced. As a fitting ending to the year 1932. ii Tail-Waggers’ Cabaret, organised by the Tail-Waggers’ Club, will be held in Wellington on New Year’s Eve. Dancing and unique items by humans and dogs will combine to make a bright entertainment in the closing hours of 1932. , Additional recruiting facilities have been arranged by the club in the following provincial towns:—Palmerston North: Mr. E.
