DELAY OPPOSED

Superannuation Funds AMENDING MEASURE Members Press for Action PUBLIC SERVANTS’ DOUBTS Strong exception to suggestions that the Government Superannuation Bill will not be proceeded with this session; is taken by a section of the Government members who are of the opinion that the measure should be passed without delay. Incidentally, it is understood that there is a large body of opinion among Government members that the present Bill should be considerably amended before it is passed. Much time has already been spent in hearing evidence by the Select Committee set up to consider the Bill, and several more sittings will probably be required before the measure is reported, back to the House. In view of the task before the committee in reaching finality, the opinion was held by some that the Bill should be held over until next session, but this course has met With considerable opposition. Consequent upon the pressure being brought to bear, it is likely that the Government will not shelve the Bill without giving full consideration to the whole question. Those favouring its immediate passing in a modified form declare that it is not fair that a matter of such importance to thousands of Public Servants should be held up how that it has been placed before Parliament and brought before the public generally. They state that the Public Servants should not be kept in doubt and uncertainty, and they will press for an early settlement of the question.

It is understood that the views of those favouring the passing of the Bill will be placed before the Prime Minister by a deputation next Tuesday. Suggestions for amending the Bill to meet with the approval of all sides of the House will be submitted, and jt is hoped that some form of compromise can be arranged. *
