Vice-Regal. The Governor-General and the Lady Bledisloe were present at the garden party held at St. Mary’s Convent, Hill Street, on Saturday afternoon. Their Excellencies afterward returned to Paekakariki. This morning the Governor-General will preside at a meeting of the Executive Council. Their Excellencies will leave Wellington to-morrow morning to undertake engagements at Palmerston North, including the official opening by the Governor-General on Wednesday of the Royal Agricultural Show. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington on Wednesday evening.

Mr. H. W. Slater, M.A., B.Sc., who is at present in the Wairarapa High School, has been appointed to a vacant A grade assistantship at the Southland Boys’ High School, states a Press Association message from Invercargill. The Rev. John Miller, of Christchurch, returned by the Rangitikl on Thursday, after a visit to England. He was the New Zealand representative at the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh and London, where he gave an address on the life and work of the Church in the Dominion.

Mr. W. G. Hughson, assistant fuel research chemist at the Dominion Laboratory, who has left Wellington to take the position of chemist to Waikato Carbonisation Ltd., was farewelled on Thursday by members of the laboratory staff. As a token of the high regard in which Mr. Hughson was held, Mr. R. L. Andrew, Assistant Dominion Analyst, made a presentation to Mr. Hughson on behalf of the staff, and wished him every success in his new position,
