TEXT-BOOK CONTRACT
Defended by Minister By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, September 5. The Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters, replying to a school committees’ deputation, which protested against the extension of the school text-book contract, said that the objections were confined to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. He said that the reduction in the price was •brought about through negotiations undertaken by him, and that no complaints had been received by the department of the deterioration in the quality of books. The Minister stated there was nothing unusual in having the same set of text-books for eight or ten years. There was no country in the world where the Department of Education held the copyright of their text-books. The Expenditure Commission had recommended a 25 per cent, reduction in the price, and an extension of the contract for three years. The new arrangement was a sound business one, advantageous to the public and parents.
