Duty on Wheat
Sir, —The Canterbury district is evidently prepared to “twist” facts in order to protect its monopoly, and even at times get away from facts. Bread may be from 3d to 4jd in Christchurch, but why pick on that town. Sixpence per loaf would be nearer the mark in most places. The board claims thit the wheat industry is one of the principal industries in New Zealand. One has only to study figures to see how far from the actual position they really are. The poultry industry, which is being absolutely crushed to provide funds for the wheat-grower, is worth far more to New Zealand than the wheat industry. New Zealand cannot produce sufficient good wheat to fill requirements, and the product that, is being sold now for fowl wheat is ruining the fowls’ digestion as well as the poultryfarmers’ finance. . The poultry-farmer is almost down and out, and yet the Government intends to callously make a profit on imported wheat, and finish him off. Hundreds of poultry-farmers will, I predict, register as unemployed in 'the next few months, and yet money is being expended to place men on small farms to rear pigs and poultrv. Would it not 'be better to keep established men on their farms? —I am, etC " "NEARLY DONE.” Carterton, September 1.
