BOMB IN FIREPLACE

Melbourne House Wrecked DEATH JUST AVOIDED July 14. When a bomb exploded in the home of John Williams at Coburg he and his wife had a narrow escape from death or serious injury. The explosion wrecked the house. Mr. Williams, who is senior inspector of the Tramways Board, found the bomb in the front garden. It appeared to be an ordinary mallee root, so he placed it on the fire in the dining-room. While he and his wife were sitting in front of the fire, they heard a loud, hissing sound. They made a hurried exit from the house. A few seconds later the bomb exploded. Detectives consider that the bomb was made by boring a hole in the root and inserting a stick of gelignite. It is believed that it was prepared for the purpose of killing Mr. Williams.
