STIR IN SYDNEY
Anzac Memorial Ceremony AN INVITATION DECLINED (Rec. July 15, 1.5 a.m.). Sydney, July 14. A sensation has been caused by the announcement that the Roman Catholic Coadjutor Archbishop of Sydney, the Most Reverend Michael Sheehan, has declined the invitation of the trustees to attend the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Anzac Memorial Building in Hyde Park next Tuesday, firstly on the ground that It is “obviously intended only for Protestants,” and secondly, “because the group of statuary entitled ‘The Crucifixion of Civilisation,’ which forms part of the memorial, is gravely offensive to Christian decency.” A hurried meeting of the trustees has been convened and hopes are entertained that the objections will be overcome.
