WOMEN CURATES

Anglican Discussion OPINIONS OF BISHOPb (By Jlavis.) London, January 27. The question as to whether the Church of England shall have women curates has, after considerable discussion, been referred by the Lower House of Convocation to the Commission on the Jfinistry of Women. The Bishop of Pontefract felt that they “might usefully be allowed to speak iu church on special occasions,” but did not favour the idea that women should be given a general license which would allow of their reading the morning and evening service.- Nor did he think that the laity would approve of this course. The Bishop of Middleton, on the other hand, moved that the refusal to grant a general license would create an undesirable impression in some circles of women’s life, and might even serve to alienate them entirely from the organised life of the church. “If these women, with developed and trained capacities and gifts of leadership superior to men, were turned down,” he said, “the deduction they would make from such action would be that a rather uneducated lay reader was allowed to do what a woman capable of being the headmistress of - Girton was not allowed to do.” LATEST IN FOOTWEAR Lace-covered Shoes for Evening’ (By “Jlavis.”) London, February 3. A revolution in sboewear is taking place. Evening shoes are in future to be made either of the same material as the gown or of the material with .which it is trimmed. One smart friend of mine, looking at her best in an evening gown of blaek lace, was wearing lace-cove'red shoes to match when I met her at dinner the other evening. She told me that the idea came to her after she had seen “a young thing” exqni- • sitely dressed in a multi-colour pastel chiffon dinner frock with shoes covered in the same material.
