DAIRY INTERESTS CONFER
Dominion Special Service.
Palmerston North, April 9.
A conference between members of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, members of the Dairy Factory Managers’ Association, and members of the professorial staff of Massey Agricultural College, was held last night, Mr. J. A. Adams, of Mangawhnta, presiding. It was explained that the object of the conference was to attempt to combine the scientific knowledge of Massey Agricultural College and the practical knowledge of factory managers and thus benefit the dairy industry. Mr. N. Fulton, dairy produce grader at Wanganui, spoke of the noticeable improvement in the quality of cheese passing through the port from the Manawatu district. Mr. Fulton also spoke of the packing of the cheese and the uniformity of its appearance. Mr. A. McKenzie, Supervising Dairy Instructor for the North Island, said the improvement in quality was not only apparent in Wanganui, but right throughout the North Island. A few years ago yield was sought after, but quality was now the aim of the producers. . . Professor Riildct, Dean of Dairying at Massey Agricultural College, and Director of the Dairy Research Institute, outlined some phases of the research work being carried out at the college and the difficulties that had been met and successfully overcome.
The grading of milk was fully discussed, and mention was made of the Improvements that had resulted in districts that had been grading throughout the season. The system of grading that was used appeared to be of little importance.
