UNPAID RATES

Wanganui County

FIRST MORTGAGEES’ POSITION

Dominion Special Service.

Wanganui, April 9.

Although sonic members were against taking extreme steps for the recovery of unpaid rates, the Wanganui County Council yesterday decided to notify first mortgagees of farms in the county that where no rates have been paid for two years proceedings will be taken, unless some effort is made to reduce arrears. The chairman, Councillor D. Mackintosh, said that the financial position of the county was satisfactory. About 90 per cent, of the rates had been paid. He considered that there were some people who should be asked to pay their rates. The county had been lenient enough and could go no further. Other councillors said that the rates should be collected in fairness to other ratepayers, and if the ratepayer himself could not pay, then the first mortgagee should be responsible. The county clerk, Mr. G. Darbyshire, said that in some cases land was not covered by a private mortgage, but by the Crown, which could not be sued. SHOOTING AT GREYTOWN The Wairarapa Rifle Association will hold a handicap meeting at Greytown on Saturday, April 23. Prize-money totalling £166 will be' distributed, in addition to valuable trophies. The programme provides for six matches, and entries will close on April 20.
