SUBSIDY WITHDRAWN

Grant for School Readers REGRET EXPRESSED Regret is expressed in the animal report of Newtown School, which will be presented at the annual meeting of householders on Monday next, that the Government has seen fit to withdraw the subsidy of £l5O in connection w’ith the scheme of supplying to the Wellington schools continuous readers, which were of great benefit to the scholars. “At present,” the report states, “the library from which the books were circulated to the schools contained over 17,000 volumes. Till quite recently the Education Board received from the Education Department an allowance of 3tl per child. When the new scheme was arranged between the Education Board and the City Council it was computed that the subsidy amounted to £l5O. It was handed by the board to the City Council. The cost of the library to dale was: £lBO, purchase of new books; £l5O, reconditioning old books; £l5O, by way of clerical and overhead charges; total, £lBO. The city library had received only one payment, of £l5O. The second year’s grant was anticipated, and was spent in reconditioning books received from the schools’ own libraries. The City Council was quite willing to continue the scheme in consideration of the payment of £l5O per year. Thirty-three schools in the city and suburbs were supplied with books.

In order that the scholars will not be deprived of the use of the books, the Wellington School Committees and Educational Federation have appealed to the different school committees and home and school associations in Wellington for funds to enable the necessary amount to be made up. The Newtown Parents and Old Scholars’ Association have donated the sum of £5.
