BIG CIRCUS AFIRE

Terrified Animals Rescued A THREAT OF ARSON Foreign Show in Antwerp By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. January 14, 7.30 p.m.) Brussels, January 14. Arson is suspected as the cause of a fire which destroyed the famous Surrazani circus at Antwerp. There were terrifying scenes while 200 horses, 41 lions, 16 tigers, 12 polar bears, and 23 elephants were rescued.

Keepers rushed in among the plunging beasts and released them from their foot-chains, but it was found impossible to release 11 animals which were fatally burned. The damage exceeds £30,000. An anonymous threat to burn the circus was received yesterday. There has been much controversy over allowing a foreign circus to enter the country at a time of economic crisis.
