LOWER HUTT DISTRESS

A New Visiting Committee At the public meeting in connection with the Lower Hutt Relief of Distress called recently by the Mayor, Mr. W. T. Strand, the suggestion was made that ladles should be asked to help In the visiting of families who required help. Up to that time the Visiting Committee of the Relief of Distress Committee was comprised of the various church ministers of Lower Hutt, with Archdeacon Hansell as chairman. Acting on the suggestion made at that public meeting the ministers of Lower Hutt met at the residence of the Rev. Harold Sharp, Methodist minister, on Monday, to fully consider matters. The meeting was continued yesterday. There were also present a number of women, and seven or eight were added to the visiting committee. Mrs. D. S. Patrick was appointed secretary, and Mrs. D. A. Ewen and Miss Davis assistant secretaries. One representative of the committee is to be always in attendance at the central office of the Relief of Distress Committee in the Borough Council Chambers.

It is considered that by these means a closer contact will be maintained between the Visiting Committee and the Central Committee than has been possible in the past. The chances of omission or duplication will be obviated under the new system, and It will be possible to make a more detailed examination of cases. It was recognised that there were many occasions when the presence of a woman was absolutely necessary if the cases were to be thoroughly investigated. The committee will meet fortnightly.
