SCHOOLS LIBRARY

Hutt Valley Scheme

HEADMASTERS VERY KEEN

If there is one thing at present which the Hutt Primary Schools’ Headmasters' Association is keen on gettiug, it is a central library for the use of the various schools in the Valley. The suggestion Is for each school to pool its library books, the central library so formed, with whatever additional help may be offering from school committees or local bodies, to distribute the books as may be decided upon. The question was further discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the association, when members reported the views of their school committees on the subject. Mr. J. C. Burns (Petone West) said that the matter was being left in the bands of the newly-formed committee. He thought something definite would be done. The Eastern Hutt School Committee was declared by Mr. A. .Mcßain to be very favourably disposed toward a central school library, and the pooling of all books. The committee made it a condition that it should be all the book®. ■ There should be no holding back. It should be absolutely a communistic scheme, as it were. ,

The matter would be placed before the Hutt Central School Committee on May 25, said Mr. H. Miller. He was in favour of the central library without reservations as to the pooling of the books. He was sure - his, committee would be, only too happy to co-operate in such a scheme. Mr. Werry said his school committee was only too willing to join in-with the scheme, and to find the money, about £5, if necessary. Mr. Marryat (Wilford)' said his committee had turned the scheme down. It was not agreeable to any reservations in the pooling of books. His' -committee, however, might be induced to reconsider the matter. ' .

Bonlcott School Committee also was not' agreeable, said Mr. Burke, as it had been suggested that schools with big libraries/ would not put all their books into the pool. That there were to be any reservations was denied by members of the association. It was also mentioned that it was not perhaps already understood that under the scheme the books for each school would be delivered to such schools.

So far as the financing of the scheme was concerned, Mr, Mcßain stated that no difficulty was anticipated at the Eastern Hutt School in getting the children to contribute threepence each a year, the committee to make up the difference, if any. It was decided to approach the Petone and Lower Hutt borough councils with a view to getting a donation toward the library.
