MR. McCURDY RETURNED

Voting for the Councils

In the three boroughs of the Hutt Valley and in Eastbourne the polling yesterday was not so heavy as two years ago. For this the weather, and the fact that in three of the four boroughs there was no mayoral contest, were chiefly respondin' Upper Hutt Mr. A. J. McCurdy was elected mayor, defeating Mr. W. Greig by 713 votes to 624, a majority ot 89. Messrs. W. T. Strand (Lower Hutt), P ; MeKenzie (Petone) and S. F. Fisher (Eastbourne) were elected mayors of thear respective boroughs unopposed. Throughout the Valley there was only one loan proposal involved. That was in Petone, where a proposal to raise, by instalments, the sum. of £35,000 for the widening of Jackson Street, was carried by a large majority. In the various boroughs the leaders of the polls for councillors were: Petone, Mr. J. C. Burns; Lower Hutt, Mr. A. Grierson; Eastbourne, Mr. W. Hornig; Upper Hutt, Mr. J. T. Hazelwood. A feature of the Petone election was the defeat of all but one of the Labour Party candidates. In the following results candidates who were sitting members are marked with an asterisk.
