Record Poll at Wanganui

MR. RODGERS DEFEATED

Keen and Close Contest

Probably the most noteworthy defeat in the Wellington province was that of Mr. W. Rodgers, Wanganui’s Labour mayor. In a record poll he was narrowly headed by Mr. Armstrong. At Palmerston North Mr. A. E. Mansford defeated Mr. M. A. Eliott by a substantial majority. , . There were few contests in the Wairarapa, owing to a widespread desire to save the expense of a poll. MANAWATU RESULTS Keen Interest at Palmerston Palmerston North Dominion Special Service. Keen interest was displayed in Palmerston North in the elections for the mayoralty, city council, and the Palmerston North Hospital Board. The mayoralty contest resulted as follows :—A. E. Mansford, 4089; M. A. Eliott, 2405. Four members of the present council who sought re-election were returned. These were W. L. Fltzherbert, McLeod, Hodgens, and Tremaine. The voting was as follows 4984; Aitchison, 4637; Cameron, 4387; Hodgens, 4022; Free, 3990 ; McLeod, 3975; Tremaine, 4047; Keeble, 3842 ; Brown, 3757 (elected). -Maunder, 2413; O’Shea, 2927 ; Mason, 2286 ; Wimsett, 2251; Robinson, 2122. The four retiring members—Mrs. Abraham and Messrs. J. A. Nash, R. L. C. Aitehison, and A. E. Mansford—were .reelected to the Palmerston North Hospital Board. Six candidates stood,- and the voting was as follows:—Mansford, 5227 ; Aitchinson, 4897; Nash, 4092; Mrs. Abraham, 4423; Fahey, 1815; Burns, 1797. Foxton Mayoralty—M. ,E. Perreau returned unopposed. _ Councillors. —J. Ross. 300; R. J. Thompson, 285; A. R. Crowe, 278; S. A. Cowley, 266; S. J. Harvey, 266; D. R. Barron, 260; F. Robinson, 254; J. Christie, 239; R. Raugiheuea, 235 (elected). K. Eastern, 171; F. H. Murray, 150. The election for two borough representatives on the Foxton Harbour Board resulted in the return of M. E. Perreau, 224; and J. Ross, 183. '■i WANGANUI’S RECORD POLL Labour Mayor Defeated By 29 votes the Labour mayor, W. J. Rogers, was defeated by N. J. Armstrong in a record poll. The voting was: —Armstrong, 4713; Rodgers, 4684. Labour has three seats on the city council. The Saturday half-holiday proposal ■was carried by 5505 votes to 3686. Harbour Loan Carried. The £40,000 harbour loan proposal was carried. WAIRARAPA RESULTS Few Polls Taken Dominion Special Service. Mastertbn, May 6. Partly owing to the absence of contentious issues and partly owing to a general desire to save the expense of elections, there was remarkably little polling in Wairarapa towns to-day. In Masterton, Carterton, and Martinborough there was no polling at all. FEATHERSTON. There was an election at Featherston for the borough council, eleven candidates offering themselves for nine seats. There are tw-o changes in the council. A sitting member, W. Peene, was defeated. his seat and that of a councillor who did not stand again being taken by R. F. Watson and T. H. Wilson. The result of the poll was as follows : — N. B. Tate. 249; C. R. Skippage, 246; 11. W. Cundy, 232; R. F. Watson. 229; T. H. Wilson. .225; W. Berton, 214: H. Buck, 195; F. E. Dohnt, 183; N. C. Shepherd, 181 (elected). W. Peene. 161; F. A. Austin. 117. GREYTOWN. An election at Greytown for the district seat on the Wairarapa Hospital Board resulted in W. A. Tate, the sitting member, being returned by a majority of 92 over T. Wade-Watford. Tate secured 159 votes, and Wade-Watford 67. EKETAHUNA. A poll was taken at Eketahuna to elect a district representative on the Tararua Power Board. The sitting member. W. Simpson, was returned with a majority of 87 over D. H. Butcher, the voting being: Simpson. 216; Butcher. 129. A poll was also held for the PahiatuaEketahuna representative on the Wairarapa Hospital Board at both Eketahuna and Pahiatua. Miss Cecilia McKenny had a majority over Mrs. David Crewe, the other candidate. The voting was as follows: —Eketahuna. Mrs. McKenny, 205; Mrs. Crewe. 139. Pahiatua: Miss McKenny. 415; Mrs. Crewe, 306. Total: Miss McKenny, 620; Mrs. Crewe. 445. PAHIATUA. Some interest was displayed at Pahiatua. where there was a contest- for the mayoralty, and 16 candidates contested nine seats on the council. .1 D. Wilson was elected mayor with a majority ’of 121 over J. D. C. Crewe. Seven retiring councillors who offered themselves were re-elected, and S. K. Siddells and G. H. Hodd were elected councillors.
