Christchurch Still I<abour MR. SULLIVAN ELECTED Christchurch again provided an interesting mayoral contest, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, the Labour M.P., defeating Mr. Hayward by a comfortable margin, after a lively contest. The Labour candidate suffered an overwhelming defeat at Auckland, Mr. G. W. Hutchison defeating Mr. H. G. R. Mason, the Labour M.P., by an overwhelming majority. The Auckland suburban contests were notable in that practically every sitting mayor was defeated. Dunedin re-elected Mr. R. S. Black, who had a small majority over Mr. W. A. Scott.

Labour Soundly Beaten By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 6. The Auckland mayoral election resulted as follows: —G. W. Hutchison, 12,749; H- G. R. Mason, M.P., 8738. There was a landslide in the suburban mayoral contests, the sitting mayors being defeated in most cases. The new mayors are as follow: —Devonport, H. F. Meikle; Northcote, R. Martin; Mount Albert, W. F. Stillwell; Takapuna, J. Guiniven; Mount Eden, T. McNab; Onehunga, E. Morton. MR. ARCHER’S SUCCESSOR Another Labour Mayor By Telegraph—Press Association. ‘ Christchurch. May 6. Mayoralty—Sullivan, 15,733; Hayward, 14,310. . ~ , . City council elections are decided by proportional representation. First preferences only were counted to-night. The retiring Labour mayor (Rev. J. K. Archer) tops the poll, followed by E. H. Andrews, Citizens’ Association. It seems possible that the Citizens Association will have eight representatives and Labour six and one Independent and one Independent Labour. DUNEDIN CONTEST Mr. R. S. Black Re-elected By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, May 6. Mayoralty—R. S. Black, 10,765 (reelected) ; W. A. Scott, 10,130. The half-holiday poll resulted: Saturday, 3519; Wednesday (the present halfholiday), 3393. New Brighton I Mayoralty—J. H. Shaw (re-elected), 1037; Leaver, 699. Oamaru There was heavy polling in the municipal elections. J. M. Forrester was returned as mayor unopposed. Timaru In an election for three representatives of the borough on the hospital board the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., who sought a seat, was defeated, being bottom of the poll. There were five canddaties. STILL IN OFFICE Old Mayor and Councillors Although the polling has taken place the old City CouneiTand Mayor still hold office—the until his successor is installed, and city councillors until the returning officer declares the result of the recount and new councillors sign the declaration. If an emergency arose and it was desirable to call a special meeting, the old Mayor and councillors would be in office for that purpose. Such a thing has happened, though not in Wellington.
