TARE TO WELLINGTON*
Imposition on Minister WOMAN SENT TO PRISON Well known in Hutt and Petone for “pitching a tale” and so getting small sums of money from sympathetic people, Doris Pearl Jensenj with four previous convictions, was yesterday sentenced toone month’s imprisonment by Mr. W. H. Woodward in the Lower Hutt Magistrate’s Court. Her offence was in obtaining five shillings from the Rev. James McCaw, of Knox Presbyterian Church, Lower Hutt, by falsely representing that she wanted the money to go to Wellington. She pleaded guilty. “The woman has a habit of obtaining money from people by these means,” said Sergeant McHolm. “She would approach people, usually having her child with her, and ask for the amount of her fare to another town, saying that she had to get there. On the present occasion she was without the child and had got the five shillings from the Rev. J. MeCaw by representing she wanted to get back to Wellington.” “I am very sorry I have done this,” said accused. “I don’t know what makes me do it. lam all right for two or three months, and then I start this silly racket. If you will give me one more chance for my baby’s sake I promise you I will not do it again.” “She promised this every month when she reported to the police in accordance with her term of probation,” said Sergeant MeHolm. “Your talk of my giving you another chance has no effect on me,” said the Magistrate. “You have had many chances already. Yon are convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.”
