HUTT VALLEY NEWS

PROVISION OF WORK Improvements at Hutt 260 MEN EMPLOYED' When the Government announced its No. 5 scheme to relieve unemployment, the Lower Hutt Borough Council submitted a schedule of works estimated to cost £6OOO. The starting of the work has been the means of giving employment to 260 men. The works include gorse-clearing in several areas, notably along the Waiwetu Stream, and the creating of new reserves. A number of men have been engaged on street-clearing work. Kiddiford Park has been extended eastward along Black Creek, and a sheltered area provided for tree and shrub-planting. A dangerous corner at Tirohanga Road is being improved. The most important work, however, is being done on the 'Waiwetu Road. The crown of the road is being reduced, and excavation to • required levels proceeding apace. When the top metal is replaced, the road will be greatly improved, and be capable also of carrying its quota ot heavy traffic. A responsible officer of the Lower Hutt Borough Council said yesterday that he regretted that more such work was not permitted to be'done under the No. 5 scheme. It was of much greater benefit to the district and to the country as a whole than grubbing gorse. He suggested that were such works fostered by the Government, a natural consequence would be the creation of further work for drainlayers, plumbers, and other trades, with, of course, the necessary labourers’ assistance, and a reduction in the ranks of the unemployed automatically effected. PETONE DENTAL CLINIC Second Annual Meeting The second annual meeting of the Petone Dental Clinic was held in the Petone Central School last night, Mr. J. C. Burns presiding. An appreciative vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring nurse, Nurse McCormick, who will leave to-day for England. Her place will be taken temporarily by Nurse Benn. Two permanent appointments will be made shortly. The officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows President, Mr. D. McKenzie; chairman, Mr. J. C. Burns; secretary, .Mr. G.
