The subject was brought up by the receipt of a statement on church union which the General Assembly’s Committee, under the convenership of the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, had sent out to Presbyteries for their approval. Among other things the statement emphasised the fact that the foundation, of the World Alliance of Churches holding the Presbyterian Order it was declared that the Alliance was founded with the object of finding “a basis in our common historic faith and order, not as an end in itself, but as a beginning toward a larger reunion.” The further fact was stressed that “the essential spirit and purpose of the Presbyterian Church” was that “permanent separation must not be regarded as being in accordance with the purpose of God for His Church on earth.” . It was further unanimously decided by the Wellington Presbytery that its recommendation to Assembly be that conversations be initiated between the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches with a view to corporate union, on the understanding that such union be not regarded as an end in itself, but as a step toward a still larger reunion.
