HEALTH FIRST

Junior Red Cross GROWING ORGANISATION “It is the sincerest hope of the executive that the Junior Red Cross, which is our hope for the future, wil continue to flourish and expand,” said Colonel the Hon. W. E. Collins, C.M.G., M.L.C., president of the New Zealand Red .Cross, Peacetime Section, when speaking at* the annual distribution of awards, last evening. “At present,” he continued, “more than 170 schools in New Zealand have Junior Red Cross Circles, which are doing beneficial work in helping hospitals, orphanages, homes, and great work helping the children of sick or needy soldiers, and the poor and aged in their own districts. No begging is allowed for this purpose, and funds are raised by bazaars, market days, and various other means.

“The first object of the. Junior Red Cross is health, and every member of the orgahisatlon must promise to observe the simple laws of health and personal hygiene. Such training as these juniors receive in personal health, service to others, and true friendship to all, must help to mould them Into the material of which good citizens are made, so that the Junior Red Cross is doing much nationally as well as internationally. “It may be Interesting to you to know that a grassland knowledge competition has been added to the. list of Junior Red Cross competitions, the intention being to encourage children to take an interest in the’country and to cultivate the faculty of observation. The juniors are much indebted to Mr. A. H. Cockayne, Assistant Director-General of Agriculture, for the valuable help he has given. We have received about 450 entries, coming from all parts of the Dominion. The Junior Red Cross Journal affords great pleasure to both juniors and adults. I want to thank those kind people who send us interesting articles for publication, and also to congratulate the editor.” Later in the evening the juniors were given a special address by the Rev. W. G. Carpenter (Uncle George, of 2YA).
