PEGASUS ALOFT
Memorial Shaft Crowned EARLY MORNING WORK The marble shaft of the War Memorial on Lambton Quay has been surmounted and glorified by the bronze Pegasus, bestridden by Victorious Youth. It was considered advisable to select a quiet hour when no one was about in which to hoist the bronze to its 60ft pedestal, since there is always the chance of accident when manipulating objects of such heavy weight. The rather delicate work was undertaken at 6 a.m. yesterday, when without any great amount of trouble the huge horse and rider, the latter with his right arm now attached, was lifted from the "round with a five-ton steel crane and placed with precision on its concrete and marble base, and there securely bolted in position. The memorial attracted attention throughout the day from thousands of people, many of whom visited the site on Lambton Quay 011 heariug that Pegasue was aloft, and soon cameras were clicking away in every direction and angle. The horse faces the north-east toward the Government Printing Office and the best lengthwise profile of the piece is obtainable from the terrace outside Parliamentary Buildings above Bowen Street, and the path leading from the entrance to Lambton Quay. There the horse and rider are seen against the sky, while a good middle distance view is possible from the eastern side of Lambton Quay.
