STANDARD CHEESE

Prohibition of Export Urged

The secretary of the South Island DairyAssociation of New Zealand, Ltd. (Mr. \V. G. Wight) advises that the following letter, dated November 18, has been addressed by the association to the Minister of Agriculture:— “We are pleased to have your assur--ance that you appreciate the gravity of the position respecting' the quality and price level of New Zealand cheese on the British market and the prejudice which is being displayed against ‘standardised cheeso, 1 “We have read in the Press that, the Prime Minister has been requested to investigate the position, and that a decision will probably be made this week as to whether or not the Government will take action to put a stop to the export of ‘standardised cheese. , “We feel certain the Prime Minister will confirm the overwhelming mass of evidence from other sources that ‘standardised cheese is seriously damaging the goodwill of the British public towards New Zealand produce, and we would again strongly urge you, sir, in the national interests, to take immediate steps to prohibit the eynort of cheese made from other than whole milk. “The longer this is delayed the more damaging will be the effects, and even if it can be proved that it is possible to make cheese from partly-skimmed milk of an equal quality to the full-cream, the fact that our overseas customers are strongly prejudiced against the ‘standardised article should be sufficient to make us realise the folly of persisting to send them a product which they do not want.
