LADIES’ NIGHT

A “Savage” Evening As usual, there was a largo attendance at the Town Hall last night when the Wellington Savage Club again held its annual ladies’ night. The cold was intense, but this did not deter all the mothers, sisters and daughters coining to see their lords And masters perform. The hall was decorated with coloured shades over the lights and red and blue round the galleries, while greenery was placed about. The seat of the Chief Savage was, as usual, placed to one side, and on the arrivel of the Vice-Regal party his Excellency was conducted to it, while Lady Bledisloe and party were provided with comfortable seats in the centre. Sir Alexander Roberts, as Chief Savage, carried out the ceremony of installing his Excellency as “Ariki Nui” of tlie Savages, and welcomed both their Excellencies to the evening. His Excellency then assumed the chain of office and presided, and later in the evening in a humorous speech acknowledged his election and thanked the “Tribe” for having made him their “Chief.”

An excellent programme was given, which was brightly carried through. The overture, under “Savage” Thomas, which was played while the guests were arriving, was followed by a Maori korero, in which Savages Claude Moss, Harison Cook and W. Nghaua were Rangitiras, and there was a large chorus of warriors. The next sketch was a “Marine” korero, with Savage Wilbur Davies as the bo’sun and Savages T. J. Jenkins, C. Hickmott, J. M. Hamilton and D. Hall as his crew. For a final item there was a military korero, “The Disorderly Room.” in which Savages C. W. Moore, Alan Fuller, W. Hancock, F. Chapman, Harison Cook and Nelson Isaac enacted in song a skit on the prisoner “on the mat” in the orderly’ room. ■ Savage Cesaroni sang “Romance,” from “Ernani” (by Verdi), and a dramatic sketch,. “The Difference,” was given by Savages Clement May and Norman Aitken.

The accompanists were Savages Frank Thomas, C. W.' Moore and G. Mackay. As was to be expected, football evidently had taken possession of the mind of the programme committee, and the executive of the club, who all helped to look after their guests, were thus put down :—Full-back, Sir- Alexander Roberts (captain); three-quarters, W. Perry, Alex Newton and J, Hislop; five-eighths, Dr. Arnold Izard and Barton Ginger; half-back, Dr. D. N. Isaacs; wing-for-ward, J. F. Carr; forwards, Lieut.-Col. R. L. Evatt, O. N. After the programme supper was served, being set on tables at either side of, the hall, while those in the galleries were served in the concert hall. As soon as supper was over the hall was cleared and dancing took place for the rest of the evening. Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe wore a gown of black velvet and a coat of floral tissue in vivid colourings. Their Excellencies were accompanied by Major and Mrs. Bathurst and Sir John Hanham, A.D.C.
