Two centre poles were removed from the Courtenay Place junction yesterday as a further movement toward ridding the street space of obstructions at this spot. In both instances the poles carried the electric signal. lights. In one case the lights have been erected above the electrical control box, and in the other use has been made of the new conveniences. The wires in connection with the signals are now underground.

A meeting of householders was held at Happy Valley School last evening for the purpose of forming a Home and School Association. About 40 were present. An address was given by Mr. N. Ingram, who congratulated the residents on the very fine school provided by the Education Board. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs. Rooney • secretary, Mr. H. Swadling; committee, Mrs. Knight, Miss Aritrobus, Messrs. Adams, Arundel and Young.

A man visiting the Winter Show did not have the luck of the Scotsman who lost 1/- and found a 3d. bit. He lost a £1 note, and after walking round for some time in the hope of finding it picked up a cheque for 14/- which someone else had lost, but which was valueless to him. It was left with the secretary of the Manufacturers’ Association. Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisloe, on their visit to the annual show of the Wellington Kennel Club, made a complete round of all the dogs. While taking an interest in all breeds, his Excellency appeared to be particularly attracted by the sporting dogs. There was a large attendance, although the hour was early. No speeches were made, the noise being too much for such a ceremony, and the opening of necessity had to be merely a formal one.

Early last evening the Central Fire Brigade were called to the premises of the Specialty Woodworking and Timber Co., 22 Haining Street. The building, which is a two-storied one, built of wood, was slightly damaged wth its. contents by fire, water, and cutting away.

A reunion of the D Battery Old Members' Association will be held on Tuesday evening. Both pre-war and active service members of D Battery are invited. The Nineteenth Battery will hold a meeting on Monday.

Of the five passengers in a large ami fairly new sedan car which crashed into a telegraph post in Happy Valley Road, near the beach, at 4.25 p.m. yesterday, two schoolboys were injured and are now in Wellington Hospital. Their names are Jack Martindale, of 204 Queen's Drive, Lyall Bay, and C. Nippert, of 30 Bay Road, Kilbirnie. Martindale broke his leg and Nippert suffered deep gashes over bis right eye and on his scalp. Both were suffering from shock when the ambulance took them away. The car, it is stated, was travelling from the beach and swerved to avoid another vehicle. It ran down the side of the road and smashed into the pole, suffering fairly extensive damage.

It is many years since sueh a heavy fall of snow was seen on the Orongorongo Ranges Yesterday the driving southerly had greatly reduced the temperature, with the result that hail and even snow fell in the city and suburbs. Practically throughout the day, the Orongorongo’s were enshrouded with heavy grey clouds, but during the clear periods the extent of the fall was made known. Practically all the range that was visible was covered. The huge slides on Mount Matthew, which were heavily coated, stood out in sharp relief against the darker colour of the vegetation. Drivers of cars stated that there were eight inches of snow at the summit of the Rimutaka Road.
