Club Rugby Matches CHATHAM CUP GAME Although principal interest will be I focused on the third Test match between the British team and the New Zealand fifteen at Auckland to-day, local followers of Rugby will have much to occupy their attention. With only one more Saturday to go. interest in the senior A competition is naturally at fever heat. . Poneke and University will supply the entertainment at Athletic I’ark this afternoon, and, although both are out of the running for the championship, a bright exhibition of the game should be enjoyed, as University lately has been showing something of the form which made them champions last season. Marist and Athletic will meet at Newtown Park, and this should also be a game worth seeing, even though Porter, the Athletic captain, will be absent in Auckland leading the New Zealand team in the Test match. There will be certain to be a great crowd nt Petone Oval, as Petone is leading for the championship, and will be up against a tough side in Old Boys, who usually do well at Petone. It is rumoured that Old Boys have a few surprises to spring upon their opponents to-day, and it goes without saying that Petone, even with Mark Nicholls away tn Auckland, will strain every nerve to retain its hold on the championship. . Eastbourne, which is one point behind Petone, will meet Oriental across the harbour, and naturally will be anxious to see that it does not miss its chance of being returned the premier team this season. ~ , . Hutt, which is third on the ladder, should have little difficulty in beating Berhampore at the IJutt Recreation Ground, although it must be admitted that Berhampore has been showing iniDroved form of late. , , .. In the senior B grade a bright game should take place between Wellington ana University at the Kilbirnie ground. Oriental will engage Johnsonville on the Johnsonville ground; Miramar will meet Melrose at Miramar; Selwyn will try conclusions with Upper Ilutt on Prince of Wales Park; and Old Boys will take the field against Training College at Wakefield Park. All matches to-day will commence at Secondary school Rugby always provides football worth seeing, and the annual match between Wellington College and Wairarapa High School is looked forward to each year with keen interest. The meeting of Petone and the Wanganui team in the Chatham Cup on No. 1 ground at the Basin Reserve to-day will be watched with considerable interest. Petone has a powerful side which is at its best form and, being very keen to win this trophy again, is expected to play a great game. The Wanganui team is practically unknown in Wellington, but as it defeated the strong fit. Andrew’s team by three goals it is possible it may surprise the Petone team and the Wellington public. In the event of a draw extra t X ■ will be played. The game between Diamonds and Watersiders on No. 2 ground in Division I, should draw a record crowd. Both teams have an equal chance of winning the championship, and the winners will probably be the final champions. Both teams are fit and confident, and the game should be a bright and spectacular one, with plenty of excitement for onlookers. Two curtain-raisers will be played at l.le p.m. Golf.

The Hutt Golf Club is sending a team to tour the Wairarapa this week-end. To-day matches will be played on the Wairarapa, Rotowai, and Greytown links, and to-morrow the Hutt forces will combine and play a match against Masterton, at Masterton. The members of the Miramar Club will be busily engaged to-day in getting off the fourball competition for the Doughty Mo; orial Cup, which always creates a great deal of interest. A match will be played on the Shandon links this afternoon between the Shandon Ladies’ Club. and the Manor Park Ladies’ Club. If the weather proves favourable, a start will be made to-day with the playoff for the senior and junior championships of the Titahi Club. A foursome, in which a long handicap player will partner a short handicap player, will be played by. the members of the Waiwetu Ladies’ Club to-day for a trophy donated by the captain, Mrs. Evisoji. The draw is as follows:—Mrs. Ryan and Miss Gallagher. Miss Robinson and Miss Lawrie, Mrs. Adamson and Mrs. Clemmons, Miss Gaynor and Miss Milne, Miss Hanson and Miss M. The men’s hockey competitions will be continued this afternoon, when it is anticipated that some interesting contests will take place. In the senior A section, Karori will play Wellington at Karori Park, aud Wesley will meet ’Varsity, also at Karori Park. The Hutt-Y.M.C.A. match Will be played at the Hutt Recreation Ground. Senior B games will be played at X’etone (Recreation Ground), Karori Park, Hutt Recreation Ground, and at Kilbirnie Park. Women’s Hockey, Much interest will be manifested in the Hutt v. ’Varsity women’s hockey match at Newtown Park this afternoon, as the result will have an important bearing in the senior A championship. Hutt will require both championship points to hold its place at the ton of the ladder, while a win to ’Varsity would, provided Old Girls beat Ramblers, give the ex-collegians the championship. This is sure to be a fast, open game, and hockey of a high standard may be expected. The last time these teams met Hutt won by the only goal of the match. Ramblers and Old Girls will provide the entertainment on No. 2 ground. Both these matches will commence at 3 o’clock. Swifts v. Training College will be one of the two early games. In the senior B grade Wenerei, the only unbeaten team, will meet its nearest opponent for championship honours, Huia, at Newtown Park, on No. 2 ground, as an early game. Both these teams should give a good exhibition of the game. The other matches in this grade are College Old Girls v. Karori, at Karori Park, and Training College v. Hutt, at Hutt. The games at Tanera Crescent are: Ramblers v. Huia, Centics v. Wenerei, in the junior A grade; and Swifts v. Huia, and Technical College v. Old Girls, in the B division. ' ( Harriers. Wellington harriers will welcome the brief respite from more serious events which to-day’s club runs will afford them. The Olympic Harriers will hold a run at Karori, Scottish one at Rona Bay (guests of Mr. W. H. Preston), and Brooklyn fom St. Matthew’s Hall, Brooklyn. Road Cycling. A 30-miie race will he held this afternoon by the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club (Inc.), starting and finishing at the Central Fire Brigade Str tion.
