CHAIR OF OBSTETRICS

WELLINGTON’S SHARE OF COST Efforts are being made throughout New Zealand to obtain £25,000 to endow a Chair of Obstetrics at the Otago University School of Medicine, and of this amount the Wellington province was asked to raise £7500. The following committee was arranged in December last year to organise the appeal in Wellington City itself: —Chairman, Lady Buckleton; treasurer, Mrs. Gaby; secretary, Dr. Eileen Chapman; assistant secretary, Mrs. M. Cable; committee, Mrs. Troup, Mrs. McVlcar, Dr. Agnes Bennett, Lady Luke, Dr. Houghton, Mrs. Eric Corkhill, Mrs. Chatfield, Dr. Sylvia Chap-, man, Miss Becknell, Miss Bagby,’Mrs. Preston, Mrs. 'Leo Myers, and Mrs. Norwood. Tho committee met last week to decide upon a plan of campaign. Mrs. Lowry, the president of the Wellington Province Committee, was present and took the chair. It was decided to issue cards of twenty coupons each to all women’s organisations in Wellington, and to ask them to undertake to sell them. Each coupon would be worth one shilling, and it was hoped that by means of enlisting the support of all women’s organisations that every Wellington woman would be given an opportunity of helping, in a great or a small way, to the establishment of the chair. New Zealand already has in the Plunket system an excellent method of providing instruction about mothers and babies both before and after birth. It is, however, considered just as essential that there should be an adequate means of training medical students to understand the peculiar ana important problems of child-birth, and that may best be done if the Medical School has a chair endowed for that purpose. The cost of the printing of the coupons and the die for them will be a gift of Mrs. Lowry to the Wellington Committee.
