PAINTING STOLEN

.. VAN DYCK MASTERPIECE (Rec. January 1, 9 p.m.) London, January 1. The Van Dyck masterpiece, “Concert Des Anges,” valued at £20,000, dispatched a few days ago from Brussels to London, and addressed to Godfrey Phillips, art dealer, is missing. When the packing case was opened it was disclosed that the picture bad been completely cut out ,of the frame. The owner, M. Bechbache, says the picture was insured for only a quarter of its value. This recalls a former theft of another famous Van Dyck at Courtrai in December, 1907, the picture similarly being cut from the frame. Later it was sold to a Bruges hawker for four shillings. The thief was eventually sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
